The Cancer Associated Serum Antigen (CASA) assay is a powerful tool for the diagnosis and management of ovarian cancer. The key applications are:
• Control of therapy in ovarian cancer patients
• Determining the patient prognosis
• Differential diagnosis between malignant and benign ovarian disease
The test is complementary to CA-125 and when used together there are significant increases in both specificity and sensitivity which in turn increases clinical utility.
Recent trials in France show CASA levels to be the most significant of all prognostic indicators in ovarian cancer ahead of both residual tumour size and half life of CA-125. By using the combination of CASA and CA-125 as a tool to manage therapy quality of life can be improved and cost savings can accrue to the health care system.
