The Fujirebio Diagnostics, Inc MESOMARK™ assay is the first serum based biomarker sensitive for mesothelioma. It has been developed for the measurement of Soluble Mesothelin-Related Peptide (SMRP) in serum. It can be followed over time and may be useful to assist in the diagnosis of mesothelioma and for the monitoring of patients with confirmed mesothelioma.
"Robinson B, et al.(2003) Mesothelin-family proteins and diagnosis of mesothelioma. Lancet Nov;362:1612-1616", it was found that:
- SMRP was significantly elevated in the serum of 37 of the 44 patients with proven mesothelioma compared to controls.
- SMRP had a sensitivity of 84% for mesothelioma, and specificity of 100% compared to other pleural diseases.
- SMRP levels may be increased in the serum prior to the presentation of mesothelioma.
The MESOMARK™ is available from the major pathology laboratories and the test results are interpreted along with other clinical, laboratory and imaging data before final conclusions can be made.
